The BIC pavillon in Paris Saint Lazare train station

veil of bic pens hanging in a train station

The BIC Pavillon, conceived, designed and built by the architects and engineers Yousef and Elias Anastas, Yann Santerre and Landolf Rhode-Barbarigos will be on display from March 29th until mid-May 2017 in the main hall of the Paris Saint-Lazare train station.

Originally created as a submission for an engineering contest, this suspended structure is composed of 12,843 BIC® Cristal® pens interconnected by means of a series of connectors specially designed and tested to satisfy the requirements of the project in both force and flexibility. With this project, the creators have sought to transform the function of a pen to keep just its texture, its reflection and its transparency. When multiplied, it becomes a decorative pattern and a new material. This reuse and transformation of the function makes the resulting chandelier highly contemporary.

SNCF Gares & Connexions promoting cultural exposure

SNCF Gares & Connexions, the SNCF subsidiary tasked with managing, operating and developing the 3,000 rail stations across France, has elected to offer these engineers and their creation an exceptional and unique form of visibility, with an installation in the center of the Paris Saint-Lazare station, where over 450,000 travelers pass through daily. The company has thus reaffirmed its conviction that train stations are distinct living spaces, where contemporary creation and innovation are fully welcome: at present, over 100 cultural initiatives and events take place every year within stations throughout the French territory.

BIC® pens have become a source of artistic inspiration

BIC, manufacturer of stationery products, lighters and razors and world leader in these segments, has been a backer of BIC Pavilion creators from the outset of the project, using its plant based in Montevrain (outside of Paris) to supply the BIC® Cristal® pens needed to build the structure and providing support during the execution and installation phases. Iconic BIC® products are exhibited in permanent collections of the design departments at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Georges Pompidou Center’s Modern Art Museum, in addition to inspiring artists the world over.
